Local 121RN and United Healthcare Workers-West members outside the courtroom where Pacifica Hospital of the Valley’s bankruptcy proceedings are being heard.

April 12, 2010 - Four nurses attended court on April 7 to send a message to  Judge Maureen Tighe that there are real live people working diligently and enduring much sacrifice to help keep the hospital open to patients.

The new deadline for submitting a plan of reorganization is now May 5.  We expect to see at least two plans filed with the court. One plan will be submitted by Sun Capital,  who has been Pacifica’s creditor, and another plan from Pacifica’s present administration.

Representative Mimi Holt will continue to meet with members in the Pacifica cafeteria  every Monday morning to hear issues, respond to questions and give updates.

We will begin distributing bargaining surveys this coming week.  There will be an opportunity on the survey to nominate yourself or a respected co-worker to serve on our bargaining team.

February 26, 2010 - Our Union Representative Mimi Holt will be in the cafeteria every Monday at 7a.m. to answer member questions until Pacifica gets back on its feet. Lots of rumors are flying around. “I see worry and anxiety etched on people’s faces,” Holt says. “But there is also reason for hope. Come to the cafeteria on Monday morning to hear more.”

January 25, 2010 ‑ The hospital made a motion in court to change one aspect of their relationship with creditor Sun Capital. They asked for the ability to use disproportionate share (DSH) money for employee salaries and patient care instead of sending the money to Sun Capital in Arizona. The judge granted their request. This is a very important positive development.

Hospital CEO A. Mousa says the hospital will have the money to completely fund payroll on Wednesday, January 27,, 2010. Mousa says that there will be money to cover subsequent payroll, as well.

The new creditor is supposed to come on line in about three weeks.

November 19, 2009 - At the request of our Union, management has agreed to change payday from December 25 to December 24.

Bargaining surveys and bargaining team nomination forms will be available soon. Please take the time to consider what you’d like to see in our next contract. Negotiations are upcoming in 2010 and what we ask for depends on the input of members.

Our cash-out issue is on a sure and steady path to arbitration. It will take a while, but we are making progress.

November 2, 2009 - We have a new bankruptcy attorney who is enthusiastic and attentive. The cash out grievance is being moved along to arbitration.

We all plan on bargaining a new contract next spring. Now is a good time to contemplate the changes that are needed.

ADO forms have been distributed around the hospital for your convenience.

Labor management meetings are happening regularly. If there is something you would like addressed, please contact any of the stewards. Examples: equipment issues, staffing issues, issues with benefits (besides cashout!!). All these can be discussed at labor management. Frequently we come with solutions there, too.
