Management Wants the Right to Subcontract…

April 6, 2011

Will Your Unit Be the First?

Rosie Suarez, an RN in the PICU, attended negotiations on March 23 to discuss her concerns over management’s proposed subcontracting language.

"We have nurses who have been in the PICU well over 30 years. I’ve been there for six years. I’m worried about our wages, benefits, job security and seniority,” Suarez says. “My eyes were opened to what happens in bargaining. They didn’t talk about subcontracting when I was there, but I’m really concerned about my co-workers, their family and their well-being,” Suarez continued. “With this subcontracting language that the hospital proposed, any department could be contracted out."

"We talked to Dale Surowitz, Tarzana’s CEO, when he met with us in CVICU. We asked him questions about the need to change the subcontracting language in our contract. He told us he was unaware of the hospital’s proposal at negotiations and asked what we were talking about. So, why does the hospital need to change the subcontracting language if they don’t have plans to subcontract our jobs?" Kathy Parlevliet, CVICU

The good news for now is that, due to patient protests, Cardiac Rehab will remain intact at Providence Tarzana. Congratulations to those employees who won’t be laid off.

Which unit is the target for layoff and subcontracting now? Will it be yours?
