Congratulations to the 11 SEIU Local 121RN members who were awarded an $1,000 scholarship toward their continued education, and one Union activist who received a $2,000 scholarship.

$2,000 121RN Robert Thomas Memorial Scholarship for Union Activists

This memorial scholarship is awarded to one SEIU Local 121RN member R.N. who has served within the past five years as a Bargaining Team Member, Steward, Chapter or Executive Officer, Union Committee Member, Legislative Lobby Team Member or other active position within the Union or Chapter. Robert Thomas was an RN at Pomona Valley Hospital who was active in SEIU Local 121RN until his health prevented him from doing so. We proudly announce this year's winner…

Marion Martinez, RN West Hills Hospital

Marion is a Union Steward, Bargaining Team Member and Interim Chapter President who actively recruited key union stewards on every unit. Marion also assisted in the Charge Nurse Union Campaign at West Hills Hospital. He actively engaged members during the recent Strike Authorization Vote through phone bank, text and face to face communications. Marion actively campaigned for AB1102, our whistleblower protection law that the Governor signed into law this year. He helped address and coordinate representational issues with SEIU Local 121RN members, as well as helping with other Steward services such as maintaining our Union Bulletin Board and distributing important flyers. Marion initiated a petition for improved security in the hospital parking lots.

$1,000 121RN Scholarship Awardees

*One of our winners, though currently at Tarzana, is a longtime SEIU 121RN member who also worked at another SEIU 121RN hospital. Our Executive Board, made up of SEIU 121RN members, agreed to recognize that member’s seniority as well. That is why our Executive Board made an exception this year to award two scholarships at Tarzana.
