California is the only state in the nation with nurse-to-patient ratios for every unit. These regulations are intended to keep our patients safe.

The trouble is the penalties for violating the law are nearly nonexistent. Hospitals claim Title 22 regulations are just “recommendations” or “guidelines.” Most are never fined unless there’s a patient death or serious injury. By then, it’s too late.

SB 1288 will protect patient safety by inspecting and fining hospitals that constantly put our patients’ care in danger.

Sample script:

My name is ____________ and I'm a ("Registered Nurse" or "Hospital Patient"—etc.) at ___(hospital name and city)___.
I'm calling to ask the Governor to sign SB 1288 into law, which will improve patient and nurse safety.
SB 1288 will mandate unannounced inspections of hospitals with a special focus on safe staffing. It will also increase the penalties for repeat offender hospitals that continue to ignore safe staffing regulations.
(If you have experienced unsafe staffing at your hospital, you can add something like: "I have seen how dangerous it is when hospitals don't adequately staff our units.")
I hope the Governor will stand with us and sign SB 1288.
