California hospitals continue to cut corners in extremely dangerous ways. And yet we have some of the strongest patient safety regulations in the nation. The trouble is there's no enforcement.

Hospitals claim Title 22 regulations are just “recommendations” or “guidelines.” Most are never fined unless there’s a patient death or serious injury. By then, it’s too late.

SB 227 will protect patient safety by inspecting and fining hospitals that constantly put our patients’ care in danger.

Sample script:

My name is ____________ and I'm a ("Registered Nurse" or "Hospital Patient"—etc.) at ___(hospital name and city)___.
I'm calling to ask the Senator to support SB 227, which will improve patient and nurse safety.
SB 227 will mandate unannounced inspections of hospitals with a special focus on safe staffing. It will also levy penalties for repeat offender hospitals that continue to ignore safe staffing regulations.
(If you have experienced unsafe staffing at your hospital, you can add something like: "I have seen how dangerous it is when hospitals don't adequately staff our units.")
I hope the Senator will stand with Nurses and vote "YES" in today's floor vote on SB 227.
