Professionals will join Registered Nurses and others in their industry in their fight for patient safety, as members of SEIU 121RN.

Thousand Oaks, CA—Licensed Medical Professionals employed at Los Robles Regional Medical Center voted in an overwhelming majority yesterday to join SEIU 121RN, a Union that represents Registered Nurses and other licensed healthcare professionals in California. The professionals, a group that includes nearly 120 Pharmacists, Clinical Laboratory Scientists, Physical, Speech and Occupational Therapists, Social Workers and Dieticians, will gain Union representation for the first time.

Clinical Laboratory Scientist Elizabeth Chernin cast the Union victory as a “dual win”—for both the Professionals and their patients.

“My department is responsible for analyzing hundreds, sometimes thousands of blood tests at a fast pace. Just one mistake could lead to a misdiagnosis, which could be deadly. Now that I have a Union, I’m confident that I can speak up about issues that affect our patients’ safety.”

“We’re elated to have the licensed professionals join our ranks, despite management’s concerted effort to dissuade them,” said SEIU Local 121RN President Gayle Batiste, RN, CNOR at Northridge Hospital Medical Center.  “Together, we’ll continue to raise standards for everyone who works in our industries, and we’ll stand on the front lines of our ongoing fight for our patients’ safety.”

SEIU 121RN represents nearly 700 Nurses at Los Robles Regional Medical Center, which is operated by the healthcare industry giant Hospital Corporation of America. The Professionals’ vote to join the Union must be certified by the National Labor Relations Board, which oversees Union elections.
