SEIU MEMBERS CELEBRATE GOVERNOR’S SIGNATURE ON BILL TO EXTEND PANDEMIC EVICTION PROTECTIONS AND ENACT NEW RENT RELIEF

Sacramento, CA -- The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) in California released the following statement from Bob Schoonover, President of SEIU California and SEIU Local 721, after Governor Newsom signed SB 91 (Committee on Budget) today:

“The protections and assistance signed into law today will help millions of renters in California who are facing the cliff of eviction and insurmountable rental debt. Working families in California, especially Black and Brown families, have been devastated by the pandemic and the death, illness, and financial devastation it has wrought. This legislation is a critical step toward an inclusive and just recovery, extending assistance to our fellow Californians who are struggling.

“We recognize that this emergency measure doesn’t fully solve the long-standing, fundamental problems of housing insecurity and affordability in California, caused by an economy and a housing market that make California such a difficult place to live for most Californians. We will continue to fight for housing justice and for a new social compact for working families. Working people in California, whether Black, Brown, API or white, need to be able to afford to live here.

“We look forward to working with all of the advocates and champions who share our goal of implementing this bill well, improving upon it, and continuously addressing our state’s housing crisis.”
