Kindred Ontario Bargaining Update #3

March 6, 2023

Bargaining Update

Our member led survey was a success—the information you provided even caught the ear of our CEO!

We covered a lot of ground in our meeting with Natalie Merkens last week. We discussed the lack of central heating, the lack of potable water, hot water in units and patient rooms, and a host of other facility issues. We also went over the C. Auris fungal outbreak in Kindred facilities. Still, the work to improve our hospital continues.

“Our position is clear, we must address the atmosphere of intimidation for speaking up about the myriad of issues at Kindred. I hope this meeting is the first of many with our CEO and Kindred about ways we can work together to improve facilities and communication. Nurses shouldn’t shoulder the responsibility of taking care of patients and be facilities manager. Kindred should be held accountable and provide us with a safe, clean, and well managed facility.”  Heather Linares, RN

Nurses demand to be treated with respect. Management's coercive tactics must be addressed. Nurses must not be held responsible for finding help and securing safe staffing. They must be allowed to utilize their right to sick days without fear of reprisal. These practices need to cease immediately.

Management should make a stronger effort to communicate with Nurses and other staff about issues that impact their safety. For example, if construction hinders accessibility and heat in a unit, Nurses need adequate notice. We have made this clear.

Our hope is that we can continue to have an open dialogue with Kindred management to solve these issues and bargain for a strong Union contract—one that puts Nurses and patients first. Kindred Nurses deserve better.
