Celebrate Nurses Week with Your Union!

Let’s celebrate National Nurses Week by ensuring that patients and nurses are protected from unsafe and illegal assignments.

Grievance Filed Over Specialty Pay

Our Union identified approximately 45 RNs who are working in specialty areas but not receiving specialty pay as required by our Union contract. Our Union has met with management and demanded that our members be given the pay they are owed for working in a specialty area. A grievance was filed on this matter to hold the employer accountable.

Garfield, El Monte RNs Unanimously Ratify New Union Contract!

Our new contract with hospital management was unanimously ratified over two days of voting June 11-12 at Garfield Medical Center and El Monte Community Hospital. This contract includes a 10.5% minimum pay increase over the 4-year term. Nurses below the new wage scale will move up to the level called for by their years of experience. And medical benefits will be rolled back to what they were in 2014!

Garfield, El Monte RNs Reach Tentative Agreement: 10.5% Pay Raise Over 4 Years!

After a last-ditch bargaining session with management on June 8, our 121RN Bargaining Team for members at Garfield Medical Center and Greater El Monte Community Hospital reached a tentative agreement (TA) with management on a new Union contract. Our planned strike is no longer needed and has been cancelled.

Bargaining Team Sets Strike Authorization Vote

We recently called in a Federal Mediator who is assisting with our negotiations with management. While the mediator has helped somewhat, we still have not come to agreement on three major issues:

Garfield, El Monte Members Picket for Fair Contract

Registered Nurse members of SEIU Local 121RN picketed in front of Garfield Medical Center on Cinco de Mayo (May 5) as part of their fight for a fair contract. The registered nurses at Garfield Medical Center and Greater El Monte Community Hospital are currently in contract negotiations with hospital management. Management has so far completely rejected our Union’s modest contract proposals.

Garfield, El Monte RNs to Hold Cinco de Mayo Picket for a Fair Contract!

Let’s show our unity in obtaining a fair contract that recognizes the importance of safe patient care through safe staffing! The public and all 121RN members are welcome to join Garfield Medical Center and Greater El Monte Community Hospital RNs at the Informational Picket on May 5. Meet on Garfield Avenue in front of Garfield Medical Center, 525 N. Garfield Ave., Monterey Park, Calif., to picket for Safe Staffing and Affordable Healthcare!

AHMC Management Proposal Adds Insult to Injury

AHMC management added insult to injury with their wage proposal to our Garfield Medical Center and Greater El Monte Community Hospital Union Bargaining Team on Monday, April 6. Management’s initial wage proposal would decimate our wage scale by decreasing the difference between steps from 5 percent to 3 percent, ensuring that only newer RNs would ever get a step increase. Management tried to look good by proposing across-the-board increases of 2 percent for those at or above the new scale, and up to a 6 or 8 percent increase (depending on which contract year) to bring those below scale up to the new scale rates. However, very few RNs would be below scale with management’s proposal.

AHMC Rejects RNs’ Modest Contract Proposals

Our RN Bargaining Team recently met for the third time with AHMC management to negotiate our next collective bargaining agreement. Our team put a lot of thought and work into presenting management with an extremely modest proposal. While AHMC thanked our team for their consideration, management flat-out rejected our team’s entire proposal.

New Contract Will Bring RNs to Scale

It took eight months of difficult bargaining, but our new contract with management was ratified by the vast majority of members voting on September 13. Our Bargaining Team was extremely pleased with voter turnout at both Garfield Medical Center and Greater El Monte Community Hospital.

Twenty-two articles and two appendices remain as they were in our previous contract, and minor changes were made to several other articles. The most significant changes came in Article 12 Floating, Article 13 Compensation, and Clinical Ladder.

May 15 Bargaining Update

At bargaining May 15, our Union team brought up the current problem of floating El Monte RNs who work with adult patients to pediatric units and having them work on pediatric patients in the ER. Our Union has received multiple RN complaints about the dangers of this practice, and management just doesn’t get it.

Team Trained for Contract Negotiations

We are preparing for negotiations upcoming this year. We have our team together and had an excellent bargaining training on Jan. 6 with Attorney Jake White.
