Garfield Medical Center 2023 Bargaining Update #6

April 3, 2023

One big float pool.

That's AHMC's vision for Garfield Medical Center.

In bargaining, management finally made clear their belief that floating is every nurse's job. They said no to any float differential at all. In other words, in their minds nurses should take on all of the risk with none of the appreciation.

And we do mean risk.

The standard for ensuring safe patient care in hospitals is to only require nurses to float after they:

Have completed orientation in their home unit and are working on their own
Have worked in their home unit for six months (9 months for floating to critical areas)
Have received orientation and have demonstrated competency in the unit they are floated to

As we all know, Garfield Medical Center fails to come close to this standard. And as they've made clear in bargaining, they're not really interested in trying.

Our proposal would lift our hospital up to the standard for safe floating.

Safe patient care is not too much to ask.
